December Goals and November Review

    Goal, er, well a Try
I'm going to first go over the final review of my November goals.
  1. Produce more than consume
    1. Make 12 attempts to get a short story (there are several possible) and/or “Tabernacle” published by the end of the month
    2. Write or Edit every day (defined as Writing = at least 1 word, Editing = at least 1 correction)
    3. Make creating apps outweigh consumption apps on my phone (more time)
    4. NO YouTube while working
  2. Focus on Health
    1. Exercise daily (defined as anything >10 pushups)
    2. Yoga daily
    3. Get to 1 pullup

  1. Production Results
    1. D- I didn't make any publishing attempts except this blog
    2. A I did that 28/30 days
    3. B With the limits I made I'll give myself a B for the reduction
    4. A maybe about 90-95%
  2. Health
    1. A about 90-95%
    2. B I didn't do as much yoga, but I did start physical training for my shoulder and that was a lot of stretching so I counted that
    3. F I didn't really even work on this
For December I want to build on what I have already, but not reinforce failure. Additionally, a lot of these are habit builders. If I have successfully built a habit I don't need to use is as a goal for future months.

December Goals (in priority order):
  1. Health
    1. Physical Therapy daily (stretch goal: do it twice)
    2. Set up garage exercise stuff (punching bag, drag tires, bag toss, tires for using sledgehammer on)
  2. Volunteer
    1. Support Scouting America
      1. Attend the Northeast Illinois Council (NEIC) Training committee meeting and volunteer for something
      2. Attend the Aptakisic District Committee meeting and volunteer for something
      3. Contact NEIC Council Ops Officer to see what help they need
    2. Attend the Wauconda CERT meeting and volunteer for an event
    3. Switch to Spanish from Dutch on Duolingo and get 15 hours (30 min a day for 30 days)
  3. Produce - Make one publishing submission
Now that I've made them public you will have to hold me to them. I can't use the endorphins of posting them to make me feel like I've already accomplished something.

If there is something you would like to see me do more of, please let me know.

GOALS!

Apparently, the work I've set out to volunteer for is difficult to get started. I've spoken with as many people as I can to get my volunteering moving, and…

I have nothing yet to report.

SO…

I'm going to share my goals for November. A bit late, you're thinking. Maybe it is, but:

  1. I'm in the last ten days and I may, just might be able to reach them if I really try and posting about them sort of puts me on the hot seat, AND

  2. I made them just before November and my birthday sort of put things on their ear if you catch my meaning. I was spun around and dizzy, but I've finally got myself in the right direction.

I feel like my volunteering is important, but these goals, though not necessarily in that exact direction nor are exact fuel to get me going in that direction, are good for the same reason my volunteering is important and I will explain after I share them.

  1. Produce more than consume

    1. Make 12 attempts to get a short story (there are several possible) and/or “Tabernacle” published by the end of the month

    2. Write or Edit every day (defined as Writing = at least 1 word, Editing = at least 1 correction)

    3. Make creating apps outweigh consumption apps on my phone (more time)

    4. NO YouTube while working

  2. Focus on Health

    1. Exercise daily (defined as anything >10 pushups)

    2. Yoga daily

    3. Get to 1 pullup

PRODUCING

I figure producing more than consuming is important to the support of democracy because

  1. I don't want to be a mindless consumer, doom-scroller, a side-line-attendee
  2. I want to produce the kinds of things that
    1. Make people think and think good things about democracy
    2. Make people feel good
    3. I want to see and read
    4. Make me feel empowered in the right direction.

BTW - It's green because green things grow

HEALTH

I figure focusing on my health will

  1. Keep me healthy for the fight
  2. Keep my healthy longer for my children and grandchildren
  3. Make my mind stronger, healthy body, healthy mind/brain for the fight for democracy
  4. Help me feel powerful and empowered

BTW - It's pink for "In the pink of health"

My progress so far:
  1. Produce more than consume
    1. No attempts at publishing yet, but I have been doing this, and publishing my blog, and there is still time
    2. I have been writing every day
    3. I don't know if my creating apps outweigh my consumption apps, but I have downloaded Screen Zen for my phone and Untrap for Youtube. Both help me limit YouTube and a few other apps on my phone
    4. I've been pretty successful with not listening to YouTube while working now that I've installed Untrap for Youtube.
  2. Focus on Health
    1. I am very close to having exercised every day at least more than 10 pushups
    2. Very close to Yoga daily, or a similar activity
    3. Get to 1 pullup - I'm in physical therapy for my shoulder to help me get to this
So you see it is do-able. I could use encouragement because 1.1 is a doozy yet and I could use all the kind words and suggestions I can get.

Thanks all!

Over the Limit

If it's not one thing it's ten things.  I've gotten myself into another fine mess.
Don't tell them how much he
weighs, Stanley

I weighed myself and I'm over my own self imposed limit.  I told myself I should never go above 250 lbs, and now I have.  This is unacceptable so I began an exercise program yesterday.

This is health related so I'm going to have to make Greek study a 1B priority.  Speaking of which, I should have been reporting on my progress.

I read on Lifehacker and am trying a program of habit sprints.

Here is the habit plan I set up on 19 Jan 15:

  1. What is the habit:    STUDY GREEK 90 MINUTES DAILY
  2. What is the trigger
    1. IMMEDIATELY AFTER WORK AND/OR BREAKFAST
  3. Reminders:
    1. TooodleDo reminder
  4. Accountability
    1. Tracking sheet
    2. Weekly Blog Reports (for report review)
  5. Consequences
    1. Positive
      1. Ice Cream
    2. Negative
      1. undecided

You are supposed to do a weekly review and adjustment.  I failed to do that, but here is the one for this week:

  1. How many days did you do the habit?
    1. 8 (out of 46) x 90 min
    2. 38 x <90 min="" span="">
    3. 3 days at the beginning with no study at all
  2. What worked?
    1. Anki flashcards
    2. Recording spreadsheet
  3. What got in the way?
    1. Daily prompt on day planner
    2. Remembering the exact number of minutes
    3. Doing a weekly review
    4. Can't have ice cream with new exercise routine
  4. How can you adapt your plan to overcome your obstacles?
    1. Pimsleur CD to and from work
    2. Record minutes by pen in my notebook
    3. Get Skype to work and have Skype conversations
Here is my plan for this coming week:

  1. What is the habit:    STUDY GREEK 90 MINUTES DAILY
  2. What is the trigger
    1. Driving
    2. After exercise
  3. Reminders:
    1. Not needed
  4. Accountability
    1. Tracking sheet
    2. Record minutes in notebook
    3. Weekly Blog Reports (for report review)
  5. Consequences
    1. Positive
      1. If I get 90 minutes in a day = IDK
      2. If I have a skype conversation = IDK
    2. Negative
      1. undecided

My Greek study has had very slow progress and I really think what I need to do is engage in conversations.  That is the main thing that will really get me going, and I'd better get going because the rest of my life can't wait any longer.

I've got to find a workout program that only take about 30 minutes a day.  Also, SEL and I are signing up for pool access at our park district.  It's the exercise she wants to do.  I'm going to have to do more.  Any suggestions?

Did you see how slow this guy's Greek study is going?

Altered Goals

I thought I would be posting a lot this month with an in-depth discussion about my goals for 2014.  As I've struggled to get almost anything done this moth I've realized that I need to make my goals very, very limited.

Things that are important to me include a lot of things, but I just can't do everything.  In fact, I can't really do very much since I am pretty slow in developing skills / learning and reading.  I also do not have very much time to myself.

I'm interested in (in no particular order):
  • Archaeology
  • Anthropology
  • Sports (watching)
    • Hockey
    • Rugby
    • Football
  • Sports (participating)
    • Swimming
    • In-line skating
    • Rugby
    • Hockey (wish I could)
    • Joining some sort of team
    • Sailing
  • Short fiction writing
    • Horror
    • Fantasy
    • Mystery
    • Sci-Fi
    • Comedy
    • Audio Drama
  • Novel writing (same genres as my short fiction)
  • Bike commuting
  • Podcasting
  • Old Time Radio
  • Pets
    • Getting another Bearded Dragon
    • Getting a dog
    • Pond fish
  • Gardening
  • Camping
  • Boy Scouts, specifically Commissioning
  • Girl Scouting
  • Deism
  • Forestry
  • Staying healthy and doing things that will help me prolong my life
  • Romance
  • Family
  • Music
    • Ukulele
    • Bass (wish I could play)
    • Sax
    • Wish I could join a band
  • History
    • Military in general
    • WWII era
    • Chicago
    • Greece
  • Astronomy and star gazing
  • Greek and Greece
  • Family vacation
  • Reading
So you can see that there are a lot of things.  A lot of these things have additional expansions below them.  A lot either need a huge investment of time, money or both.  Some of these things are very personal, some are charitable and some are involved with others in a mutual nature.

Even when I start to narrow down the list or prioritize it so that I can develop goals I end up adding more and more.

Previously I listed five areas for goals:
  1. Greek
  2. Archaeology
  3. Writing
  4. New Job
  5. Commissioning
I left off a health oriented goal, but two weeks ago I weighed myself and clearly I need to exercise on a regular basis.  You can see that the goals keep getting scope creep. If I want to change these six to areas of importance rather than goals it might help, but I'm not completely convinced.

I think I need to tighten this very much, man up and focus.

My will make just two goals:
  1. Learn Greek
  2. Get published
However I will measure everything I do against 7 priority levels:
  1. Staying healthy
  2. Learning Greek
  3. Staying employed
  4. Family support (things my family needs me to do)
  5. Commissioning
  6. Getting published
  7. Archaeology
I'm going to talk about my priorities more on Flowers of Mundelein.  I'll track my Greek goal on Flowers and my publishing goals here.

Late Report Again

Let's see, I last posted on 12 May 13 and it is 22 May 13 today, that's 10 days and I'm supposed to be reporting my progress on my goals weekly.  Also, if I want readership then I have to post regularly, but I'm not.  You can't see it, but Sister Mary Agony of OLBA (Our Lady of Blessed Acceleration) has a yard stick (Sister don't truck with no metric) ready to crack my knuckles, as well I deserve.

I did start Exercise Across Abbott, and that's a good thing.  From 6 May 13 to 9 June 13 I have to track my workouts and try to increase the number of minutes each week.  The first week we went to Boston to pick up Little Propette #1 so it was easy to keep the minutes to a minimum.  I increased the next week by 53 minutes.  This week I am on track to increase again, even though I had a cold the end of last week through yesterday / today.

I've also been studying Greek a bit more.

I'm feeling extra guilty though because I let the deadline for two writing contests slip by and I didn't submit anything, although I had started stories for both.

I know that both Terry Pratchett and Ray Bradbury say that you need to write daily.  I think Pratchett said 400 words and Bradbury said 500.

Not an excuse (or maybe just a little excuse, please don't tell Sister) but one thing that has me a bit flustered is that I've stirred up interest in Howlina, and while I am interested in that story, it is just a bit too involved to get into right now.  Also, I really want to write a mystery story, but I'm not really sure I can do it.  All the previous mysteries I've written just don't seem to work.  I'm also fidgeting with wanting to write a fantasy, and a horror story (two different stories), but those come easy and they feel like cop-outs, but on the other hand the better fantasy stories and better horror stories don't come easy.  I suppose that seems like several (excuses) but it really comes down to state of mind.  I'm not sure what state of mind I want to put myself into and keep myself in long enough to write a story.

I know I can throw 1,000 words on a page a day, but I have to stop doing everything else to do it and in the end I have a pile of pages each with a pile of words.  I've done it multiple times and I have multiple unpublishable novels to show for it.  I don't think that's the answer.

And anyway, that's not a goal I set for myself this year.

I suppose I should go off to check the job boards and do ten Hail Mary's.

Finished P90X!!!!!!!!

I did it!  I finished!  I am indulging myself today and I feel kind of fat, so I think I'll save photos until I go back to doing cardio and feel thinner.

This is the chart I used to keep track of what day I was on.  I started after the first month because it got a bit confusing and this was much easier than most other formats.  I crossed off any day I did.  I circled days I missed.  The Xs are the week I doubled up so I  could make up days I missed.

I didn't get where I wanted to from this program.  After 70 days of P90 in 2008 I was down to 216.  That's the lowest I've weighed since I don't know when.  Admittedly I did a lot of other things in addition to the P90, but I expected to at least get below 220 and I only got down to 225 this year.

I'm not blaming the program.  I probably didn't do something the right way.  I suspect my bad knee and the days I had to miss were part of the problem.

Anyway, I'm done.  I did it.  I am a P90X graduate.

Now, what's next?

I should reward myself, but how?

I'll have to think about that, but for now, I have one more goal down.

P91X or Is It P87X?

Today was Day 91 of P90X or was it Day 80?  I repeated one of the hard weeks last week so now I'm on the last real week, the one with all the cardio.

I'm going to make up the most of the 10 days I missed by doing that extra week, so in the end I will have done 87 days out of the 90.  I don't think that's too bad.

I'm certainly stronger than I was and all my clothes are looser.  I am 226 still and I was about 232 when I started.  I was probably at about 24% body fat when I started.  I don't know where I am now, but I'm not going to take the final measurements and pictures until I'm all done with this week too.

Belated - Weekly Report, Kαλό Mήνα, etc.

Happy April everybody.  I missed reporting last week and I missed wishing everyone a happy new month.  To top it all off I posted my "Papa Story" in the wrong blog (I've also posted it in Papa Stories so no worries).

Let me tell you a bit about P90X.  The system is designed with 12 different exercise routines.  5 of them are cardio based (Cardio, Plyo, Core, Kempo, Yoga) and 5 of them are circuit based weight training.  Each week you do a circuit day, followed by a cardio day, circuit day, cardio day, circuit day, and finally a cardio day.  There are two more DVDs: an intro disk and an Ab Ripper X disk.

Since you have 5 cardio and 5 circuit disks each they do 3 of each type in a week.  They then divide the whole program into 3 phases.  There are three really hard weeks in each phase followed by an easier week.

I'm in the last week, which is an easy week by design.  I'm on Day 85 today.  Since I had to miss 10 days throughout the program I've decided to do an extra hard week before I bring it in with an easy week to finish.

As if that weren't confusing enough, the hard weeks are divided into a more general routine and a more specific routine.  For instance, in the general week you get a disk called "Back and Arms," in the more specific week, one of the disks you use is, "Back and Biceps."  In Phase 3 you do one general week, one specific week, one general week, one specific week and a rest week.

I'm adding in a hard general week.  BTW, I'm still at 227lbs and my knee still bothers me.

I think my knee is going to bother me forever now.  I don't think it will ever stop being something of an irritation.  I will probably have good days and bad days, but I suspect that it will be generally down hill now until I need to get it replaced some years in my future.

On a much brighter note, I DID finish my Level 2/3 Girl Scout Outdoor training.  I'm now certified and our Girl Scout troop can officially go tent camping.  So we can check that goal off as completed.  Hooray!

That gives me an idea for this month's poll:
Are you still following your New Year's Resolution?
I say that I am.  Is anyone else?

In my monthly goal review, I'm on track for P90X, and my Girl Scout goals.

We did not go on a date in Quarter 1, so that is a fail so far.  However, there are 4 quarters of course, so I can still get 75% in this category.

I have met with my mentor and I think I have the new jobs board at work figured out.  I attended a class on setting up your career development in our new system.  So that is all positive for finding a new job, but there is nothing currently out there for me to apply to.

I'm working on the Gold level of Unit Service for our Boy Scout District's Journey to Excellence.  It will take all year to find out how we do, but it's looking good so far.

I have not really worked on the Fortnightly History Podcast, but now that two of my primary goals are coming to an end I should be able to work on that more.  I'm also getting ready to start riding my bike to work again.  When I do that I will have more time to think about things, and I will have a better view of the trees in the neighborhood.

The weakest spot in my work on learning Greek.  I havent' done much in that vein, but I have decided that I am going to get up from my desk and walk around a bit each half hour.  When I do that I will study my Greek flashcards.  This should help me a bit.

Weekly Goal Report - Some Good, Some Bad

I am very late in reporting.  This report is actually for the week of March 10-17.

That's not the bad news.

The bad news is that I have now missed 10 days of my P90X program.  I'm on day 73, but in the past 4 weeks I have missed at least one day in each week.  The program calls for working out six times a week, but in the past three weeks I've only worked out four days each.

This is due in a large part to my injured left knee.  I would estimate that it is now at about 95% and doesn't cause me pain at all when not in use.  When I first start walking or when I exert myself a little then it does cause discomfort.  I have no real pain at all with it unless I exert myself quite a bit at a certain angle.  I am nervous about it though and shy away from what may, at the time, seem like slight discomfort when I'm exercising.  When I actually hurt it this time I didn't really feel any pain when I was actually exercising.

Day 5 of the P90X weeks is almost always a leg workout, so you can see why Day 5s have been missed, deliberately and not.

Day 6 is Saturday and the day when I have to actually steal time from family time to make exercise time.

Excuses are over.  This week I am determined to do whatever it takes to get in 6 workouts.  I only have a few weeks left.

The question is begged though, with 10 days missing, should I continue until I make them up?  If I just go 90 days from when I started then the end is on 7 Apr 13.

The trouble with just continuing is that the program is not regular.  The concept is to cause muscle confusion by varying the workouts.  It is not the same thing every day or even every week.  There are two kinds of leg workouts and probably about three kinds of arm workouts.  Sometimes arms are combined with back and sometimes legs.

I also can't just go back and do those exercise days that I missed because as I said, quite a few of them are leg workouts and I can't do back to back to back legs.

I'll let you know what I figure out.

The good news is that I'm on Day 73 of P90X and the last time I weighed myself I was 227.  That's the lightest I've been this year.

In other good news, I finally signed up for Girl Scout Outdoor Training Module 2&3.  This is an all day outdoor training and I'm going to do it tomorrow.

And to close out with just a hint, a pinch, a whisper of bad news, it is supposed to only get up to 37 degrees tomorrow.

Καλό μήνα Popeless Lion

Retiring to Cancun? Via con Dios!
Today there is no Pope (well, there is, just not a Roman Catholic one) and March came in like a lion around here.
There is an old saying that goes something like, in like a lamb, out like a lion.  In other words, if the March starts out mild then it will end bitter and cold.  I've always considered the opposite to be true too, in like a lion, out like a lamb.  So this lion business today is good news.  It was snowing this morning and in the mid 20s (F).

Pope Benedict XVI's resignation was official yesterday so there going to have to elect a new Pope.  I am putting up a new poll about what you would do if you were elected.

Before I get into that I wanted to report on my goal progress.  I'm continuing with P90X fairly well.  I've got some aches and pains which seem to come to me right around the 60th day.  The wear and tear gets to me and I'm going to have to fight through it.  I have been bouncing around the weight I started with (actually I've been yo-yoing under it) so I'm hoping the last 30 days is when you loose all the weight.

I've been very lax on working on Greek.  I've let it slip and I'm going to have to buckle down.  It's mostly a matter of discipline.  I have some things to work on and I planned on working on it whenever I get a free moment, to fill up the empty minutes between things.  I haven't actually been doing that though just because I've had a hard time motivating myself.

I've also let the job hunt slip a bit.  They've changed the job search system  here at work and the automatic notices of posting has stopped working.  I haven't figured out how to get it back yet.  That's the next thing I need to work on.

I have to get my Girl Scout training in this month, so I'm going to be VERY busy doing that.

We are moving our Commissioner meetings starting this month.  I think that is an important step in getting our Commissioner staff right.  We will see what we can do with that.

I've been reading a lot of Chicago history blogs and forums lately.  I have a bunch of DVDs produced by WTTW and Geofery Baer about Chicago and I watch them pretty often.  I think I've decided that I'm going to go with a detective theme for my Chicago History Podcast.

I've figured out a way to synergize my spiritual and Archaeology goals by learning how to make fire the Amerindian way.  This will involve learning the correct woods to use, which involves learning the trees.  I love it when a plan comes together.  I'm going to work on it after it gets warmer, later in the Spring.

My last goal is to join a club.  As you can see I've been pretty busy and this is my last priority so I haven't done anything with this.

Last month's poll was, "When do you think the USA will fall from superpower status?"  This poll didn't get very much traffic at all.  There were only 3 votes including mine.  Within the next 15 years won by two to one against, "In this century."

Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria
My new poll will hopefully garner more enthusiasm.  Since the College of Cardinals is currently meeting to elect a new Pope, and conceivably they could elect ANYONE that God tells them to, they could elect YOU (or me).

The poll has this in mind as a starting point.  Assuming you are elected Pope and assuming you accept the job (pretty secure and it includes room and board, and uniforms) AND assuming (and this is the biggest assumption) you can actually change some things, what would be the FIRST thing you change?
  • Homosexuality is no longer a sin - This would allow gay priests and presumably gay marriage etc.
  • Priests can get married,  and/or married people can become priests (all clergy really)
  • Women can be priests (bishops, Pope, etc.)
  • Birth control is not a sin, do it people
  • Fertilized human egg cells are NOT people - we can argue the validity of abortion and so forth so other time, but here I'm thinking about the RC policy that as soon as a single egg cell is fertilized it is a human and must be treated as a human, even if it would be naturally aborted and COULD NEVER develop into an actual human being.
  • Zero tolerance policy on pedophilia and other sex crimes - if they are found they are out, excommunicated, turned over to the law enforcement community instantly, no exceptions
  • Reunite with the Orthodox Church
  • Other
Oddly enough none of these things are really theological except maybe reuniting the churches.  They don't really deal with who God is, but more about who we are.  I don't know if these are really the most important issues, even though they are certainly the issues we more secularly minded people are most interested in.

Let's talk about it and certainly vote on it.  Come on people let's vote.  The Cardinals are doing it, so should we.

Goal Report and "Gone Daddy Gone"

Although in great pain in my left knee I've completed Week 7 of P90X.  That ends the hard part of Phase II.  Next week is a "rest week"  of just cardio and yoga and such.  That's good, because it will hopefully give me a chance to let my knee heal.

What has me just as concerned is that my viewership has gone down steadily this year.  From a peak weekly average of about 11 views per day, down to 3 per day last week.  I guess I can say anything I want now because I know no one is going to read it.  This is quite frustrating.

I don't know if it will help, but I did promise some fiction and I did write a story.  I guess now is as good a time as any to share it.

Gone Daddy Gone

The snow was coming down in buckets; buckets of slush that would taste like oily Slurpee if one were to put a straw to the streets. In less than an hour the nightfall would turn it into freezer-burnt ice cream.

Monica could almost hear the soggy snowflakes smacking the window. She hugged herself as she took a drag from her clove cigarette and thought, "Good, they won't come today."

She had to take them if they came, that was her vow, her vocation, but no one would come on a day like this. Still she had to be ready, standing there letting the power flow through her in a dribble, as little as possible, but ready to open the slue and flood over her.

The dribble tickled, warmed and dulled her. The longer she kept it flowing the worse it would get. She dreaded a useless hangover. If she could just know that it would all be worth it, she could stand it.

Just a quick peek, a glimpse, like downing a shot of tequila, then she could go to bed and sleep it off.

She breathed deeply, closed her eyes and let the visions wash over her.

The day blurred in swirling, darkening gray, a fast forward of the whiteout turning to night. A dark shape exploded into existence, she slowed it until it became a man, stooped and slogging.

He made his way past her yard. When he came level with her gate another figure appeared, taller, more mobile even in the thick white. He came up from behind with a full hand; something glinted in the feeble light.

"No," she reached out, but that was not hers to command. She could not stay the execution simply with her hand. She tried, she drew in the power, drank it deep, felt her head swim, her acuity slipping. She swung the power like an overcharged fire hose.

She slowed it, got herself under control before she lost it. The man took the other and left him slowly staining the snow with his life, then he ran off into the balls of yellow light that struggled to guide him through a dark and white night.

This did not, would not happen for hours she guessed. She had time yet to help him, to stop it.

The thought was a small child lost in the raging tempest of her drunken mind. She slipped and fell to the floor wet in nothing but her tears while she drowned in the power.

"Stupid," she cursed herself. She lay still gathering her thoughts, letting the room spin and concentration not on herself, but on the problem.

Suddenly she retched, jumped up and vomited from her hands and knees. Three full heaves and she steadied herself. It helped, she could stand.

She let the mess stay on the hardwood. She staggered to her desk and retrieved the amulet and let more run out of her, into the device. She walked to the bathroom and splashed her face with cold water three times before grabbing her coat from the hall hook and going out to the garden gate.

She went to where he would be, where the act would take place. She stood there shivering, but if she were there it couldn't happen THERE, it had to happen somewhere else and maybe not at all.

Her feet started feeling wet in her thin boots, her coat got wet, the scarf on her head soaked. The shivering crawled its way to her bones. She hugged herself tighter and stamped the slush; always watch from where he would come.

How long? When? She had to know. The cold was just too much. Her mind wasn't fully clear yet, but she couldn't stand there for hours, she'd die of hypothermia.

She grasped the amulet tightly and let some of the power slosh over her weakened levees. It was a careful, calculated measure.

There was the street in the dark storm in a different time, in his time. The man was there, a few feet away looking down, fighting through the storm and whatever pains of his own.

But, the time? She looked around to see how long she would have to wait for him. Something was wrong, suddenly she realized: the street signs were different.

The Chicago street signs had been white on green since she was a child, but before that they were black on yellow, same as the one she now looked up at. She hadn't looked forward, but back.

The man looked up and saw her, just in front of her, their eyes met.

"Monica?"

She stood frozen.

He reached out, in his hand her amulet.

The other man struck. He was on the first, his knife struck as the amulet passed to her hand. The old man fell at her feet.

Just before he turned to run she looked eyes with the killer, "Father?"

"The amulet must pass in blood, I had to, I promised your grandfather. Now you must make the vow."

She drank the power deeply, her grandfather pouring it down her throat, "I swear."

He took a breath and ran off into the night as she returned to the now and collapsed into the unstained slush.

Goal Report (P90X Mostly)

I'm done.

I'm done with week 6 of P90X.  There was no problem with that, but now I'm part way through week 7.  I had shied away from the Plyo because I had hurt my calf doing it when I was doing my first attempt at P90X.  I had figured I had waited and been doing Cardio as a substitute for long enough.

I did Plyo yesterday and today I couldn't walk on my left knee.  Well, of course I could, but only with extreme pain.  Well, I guess that's it then.  I have to find another high intensity cardio workout with low impact.

I have not done the Girl Scout training yet.  That's bad and I have to fix it.

P90X eX-Xvi

Going to take up cycling around Miami?
I have completed week V of my P90X work.  I completed week IV but that was a cake walk because it was the resting week.  Week V started Phase II with some new routines and a slightly different pattern.  It was a bit tough because of scheduling.  I had to skip Tuesday and I didn't get to Friday or Saturday until after 10:00pm (2200).  It is done now though and in the books, now to continue with Phase II.

If you are wondering about all the roman numerals it is because I found out this morning that today they confirmed that Pope Benedict XVI is going to retire at the end of the month.  RETIRE?  I didn't know they could do that.  Wikipedia says the last time a Pope retired was in 1415 (that's before there WAS an America (the continents I mean, not just the country (and by this I'm sure you know my tongue is firmly plastered to my cheek)))!  I wonder what the deal is exactly and when the College of Cardinals will meet up to elect a new one.  I'll have to keep an eye on it.

I'll let you know right now that although I consider myself a Secular Catholic and a Deist, if I'm elected, I WILL serve.  It has always been my contention that if the College of Cardinals sends up the white smoke and comes out with MY name then the hand of God must be in there somewhere.  Who am I to question the will of God?

My Girl Scout goal is to get Outdoor Training.  I have yet to reschedule, but I do have new emphasis and reason to get off my thinking place and do so.  Our troop is planning a camping trip in April and next month is March, when I have to get my training.

On a Chicago Lincoln Avenue Trail note.  As you know my goal is to develop and write a fortnightly podcast of Chicago History to reinforce and compliment the CLAT work we're doing.  This afternoon I'm meeting with part of the steering committee to do a little steering.  We are going to work on writing a proposal for prospective Eagle Scout candidates so that the project to work on the CLAT with us is within the guidelines of the requirements for the Eagle Scout project.

Wheel of Meat and Update

The big A has spun the wheel of meat again and I was not selected.  We lost about 100 people, half of my department are gone, again.  We lost half last year too.  Bottom line, I'm still where I was, doing what I was.

I did complete P90X week three last week and I'm halfway through week four.  This week is the recovery week so I'm doing yoga, core, kenpo and stretching.  It is SO nice.

Singed and Synced

I got blisters on me fingers!
As reported I burned my hand last Saturday.  I had expected I would have to do alternate activities in P90X because of it, but I guess I treated it properly and I was able to do everything.  I did count 20 individual blisters.  In the last two days they have calmed down and are now thick dead skin.  It sort of feels like I'm wearing a glove, or like my whole hand is calloused.  I included a picture when it seemed to be the most obviously blistered.

I'm afraid I won't be able to play my ukulele for a while though.

The sync part is more than just a chance to be alliterative, I figured out some ways to kill several goals with some of the same stones.

I've decided the Archaeology experiment I want to do it starting fires the way natives in my area would have.  This ties in with my goal to learn the trees.  I'll have to learn the woods they would have used.  I've been told that the hand drill method of starting fires was almost universal (this is the method that Tom Hanks uses in Castaway).

This is also somewhat historical for the Chicago area and I could use it for my Chicago History podcast.

You may be asking yourself, "Self, you look marvelous today by the way, did you get a haircut, or lose weight?"

Actually, you may be asking yourself that, but more to the point you may be asking yourself, "Self, thank you for noticing by the way, anyway, self, didn't we read that Prop was going to give us some fiction?  And hey, why is he talking about goals again, I thought we were through with that?"

Well, I did promise fiction, and I'm working on a little story I should be able to post in the next couple of days.

The reason I'm bringing up goals again is because I committed to reporting on how I was doing.  It was something I didn't do very well last year.  I've been reporting on my exercise, but I haven't yet mentioned any of my other goals.

I did commit to reporting my Health goal on a weekly basis.  The other reports are supposed to be on a monthly basis, except my Girl Scout goal which I'm supposed to report weekly.  For that my goal is to get Outdoor Skills Training.

I'm sorry to report that I have not had a chance to work on that at all.  I'd like to blame my burnt hand, but that is a sync too far.

P90X Week 2

Can you guess where I got this X?
I finnished earlier today, but I have another week done.  It was harder than last week, and I haven't lost any weight.  I suppose my body is still getting settled into the idea of working out every day.

I gave blood today too, and my blood pressure was great, so I definetly have to keep going.  The only concern I have right now is that I burned my hand.  I had heated a pipe to try to get it loose from another pipe.  I had thought that the heated area would expand and help me get them apart.  As I grabbed the pieces I wanted to twist and rock them, so I put my left hand closer to the joint.  I could feel it sizzling like a steak on a griddle.

I was right by the sink so I immediately ran cold water on it and dumped my hand in a pitcher of ice water.  Right now I have an ice pack on it.  I'm going to blister on most of my fingers and maybe part of my palm.  I just hope it isn't so bad that I can't hold weights to work out on Monday.

P90X Week 1

Just a few minutes ago I finished my first week of P90X.

I've been doing it off and on since late October, but this was only the second full 6 day week I've done.  I thought I would start in late October and be super fit by Christmas, but I didn't have the yoga disk and then Thanksgiving got in the way, then Christmas and New Years, and I hurt my calf overdoing plyo, and then there was Kwanzaa and Hanuka.

To quote Jake Blues, "There was a hurricane, an earthquake...it wasn't my fault!!!"

Last Monday was my official, official start day, and to paraphrase Darth Vader, There will be no holidays to stop me this time.

I have an Excel file I found and it talks about a Classic Program and a Lean Program.  The copy I have is not complete, but it looks like I only have the Classic, except that I have all the disks.  Because I hurt my calf a couple of weeks ago I'm a bit leery about doing plyo full out, so I opted for the cardio instead of plyo for this first week.

Yesterday was the worst, only because I had a lot of things going on and I didn't start to work out until 2300.  I finished at about 0030, so I sort of did a double today.

I dialed down the intensity from the highest I had gotten in my intermittent stages of November and December.  I figured I'd reset the bar and keep raising it from this week forward.

Isn't that a funny expression, "raise the bar?"  I always think about limbo when I hear that and it confuses me.  I keep thinking that it would be harder to lower the bar.

Anyway, I still can't do a regular pull-up and I don't really have a space I can do it.  Where I have my overhead pull-up bar I have to bend my knees just to hang at full arm and it think it hampers me a bit.  No excuses, but I do think I would be able to do at least one if I could hang straight.

Without a real pull-up bar and no bands to use I have a waist-high bar and I lay on the floor.  I can't reach the bar when I lay with my arms fully extended (in other words, when I am holding the bar I can extend my arms fully without touching my back to the floor).  This week I did all my pull-ups with that bar and with my feet up on a chair so I know I'm not getting any help from my legs (it just makes everything a bit lighter).  When I was doing it in November and December I would occasionally try the higher bar.  As soon as I am able to do any with the higher bar I'm going to switch to that and only add the lower bar after I've done all I can on the higher one.

So anyway, that's one week in the bag.  Is anyone else doing P90X, P90, Zumba, Buns of Steel?

Puny God!

I'm guessing that the Incredible Hulk is hot on his tail here.  Ha the joke is on the Hulk, if he tries to grab the Great Cthulhu he will only come up with a giant green hand full of extoplasm.

Cthulhu is not of this Earth puny "super" hero, ha ha ha ha ha...

Speaking of Hulks and heroes, I think I started P90X today.  I wasn't planning on it, but this week I can't ride my bike to work and today, out of the blue, Mac hand delivered a copy of the set to my door.

What a guy (thanks again man)!  The least I could do was to start exercising.  I did day one and I went really light so make sure I started out slow and with correct form.  The Ab Ripper TORE ME UP.

I took a before picture, but well, I think HPL said it best, "a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline,... rubbery-looking body.... This thing, which seemed instinct with a fearsome and unnatural malignancy, was of a somewhat bloated corpulence..." (from the short story, "Call of Cthulhu").

Let's hope I didn't bite off more than I can chew, like the Avengers did when they decided that the stars were right.

2012 Goals One by One - Physical (Health)

I gave myself the following goals for 2012:

Physical (Health and Work)
Honestly I've got to split these out, I can't have one without the other, for so many reasons.
1.  P90X or Insanity
2.  Get a new position

Social (Family)
Quarterly Dates - one substantial date each quarter

Mental (Music and Writing)
Make at least 4 novel submissions this year

Spiritual (Scouting)
Commissioner's Key

The article in LifeHack gives 9 parts to each resolution.  I'm going to do the Health one today.

1.  Goal
Finish P90X or Insanity by 30 June 12.

2.  Benefit of meeting the goal =
Live longer, give myself a chance to do something after retiring and enjoy my grandchildren

3.  Reminder of this benefit =
I think about short life all the time with reminders of my father's cancer, but I think I will also find a symbol of Archaeology to put on one side of each of my computers and a grandchild for the other side.

4.  Anti-benefit, the benefit of not accomplishing this goal =
Get to relax and not exercise.

5.  Alternate means of achieving the anti-benefit =
I'll take September off of exercising.

6.  Task list (or milestones, or intermediate goals) =
  • Get P90X (it's on hold at the library)
  • Alternate is to borrow it from a friend
  • Last alternate is to buy it
  • Exercise in the meantime so I can be ready to do it
  • Get all the equipment I need for it

7.  Next Step =
Find out what the starting requirements are for P90X and Insanity

8.  Who do I have to be to be able to make this goal (or who will I be when I make it) =
Buff stud (just kidding), I have to be thinner and stronger

9.  Accountability =
  • I've posted this here, and I will keep posting here on a weekly basis once I start
  • I will have a spreadsheet to track my progress
  • I will post my before, during and after pictures.

Bike Commute 2011 - Day 32

Back on the dusty trail Monday, finally.

IN -

I actually got out and started at almost 4:00. I made it to work at a good pace and 34 minutes. That's not bad considering I'm over a month out of practice. I did notice that it's dark later now, and was concerned that I didn't see or hear any animals at all until I got just before work and heard some crickets (or frogs, sometimes I can't tell which is which). Where have all the critters gone?

HOME -

Last Friday/Saturday was the biggest single day rainfall in the history of Chicago weather-keeping (since 1871) so I expected the Des Plaines River Trail to be flooded but I didn't see any sign of that as I passed over the river. There also weren't any puddles or any mud on the trail. I was a bit surprised.

There was a downed tree branch. There is quite a bit of that around since the week before last we had a huge storm that ComEd said caused the 4th biggest blackout they have ever had. That one blew down trees and buildings.

Today it was very pleasant. It wasn't as hot as I had feared (feared 90s and got 80s) and there was a gentle headwind. It wasn't enough to impede progress, but just enough to add a bit of cooling effect to the ride. I actually felt more comfortable going home than coming to work.

It was a pretty quick ride at about 46 minutes.
In other news -

I started working out again. This is in addition to the bike rides. I'm going to mix Body for Life and Power 90 (no not P90X, just plain old P90). I don't expect to do it for 90 days, but I want to get into pretty good shape for Old Boys.
